House Hunt
Hi guys.
Before we get into business, I'll be so selfish not to share the music album that has been on replay on my phone. Yes! you guessed right 'Moral Instruction' by my husband Falz (Not like I'm cheating on Olamide. Common, a girl can have two husbands...yeah?).
This Nigga shaked so many tables and I really hope those on top will change for the better but I dare not dream high because, 'This Is Nigeria' (by him too). Shouldn't you just make me your music plug? (Trust me...Your playlist will be so BORING).
Listen and thank me later(with gifts o ).
Someone very close to me is currently house hunting. The person inspired this post.
This blog post was written with mainly students in mind. Especially those that are not destined to stay in the school's hostel till they graduate like me. It could also be of help to anyone currently searching for a house or, with plans of in the future. Anyone who knows someone that knows a person house hunting too (we're our brothers keepers right?). Infact this post is for EVERYONE. So, fasten your belts let the journey begin.
BUDGET: Make a budget first. You should have the kind of house you want in mind. Is it a one bedroom apartment, or a self-contained apartment? how many rooms are you looking at? And most importantly, can you really afford it?. This is not the year we will do pass ourselves please. Check yourself financially before you will include both your school fees money and your furniture money (if you plan on getting them) to pay for only house.
LOCATION: The location should be important in the search. Your house should be near wherever you go almost everyday (if not everyday). It could be your school if you are a student or, your workplace if you are working. This will help curtail the amount of money you spend on transport especially if you are saving to buy so many stuffs like me.(my money always disappears sha. Courtesy of Mr. Nobody). It might sound cheap in the beginning but, if you calculate the total after like a month or, two you are bound to be unpleasantly suprised. This factor comes in place incase of an emergency too. Let's say an impromptu early morning or late evening test comes up or, you woke up so late and you have an important meeting in few minutes. Ehen Ofcourse that is when there will be heavy traffic. Consider the location of the prospective house to avoid wishing you could fly.
STATE OF THE HOUSE: Let's say you have seen a prospective house within your budget, please check the state of the house. This cannot be over emphasised. I will always say the best period to check out a house is during rainy season. If possible, after it rains heavily. You wouldn't want to pay for accommodation and find out you would have to change the roofing sheets. God help you if you had used your last card to get the house. Be ready to buy pails to trap water whenever the roof leaks. Check the sockets if they are actually working or, just there for fancy. Before you commit your money to anyone, the state of the house should be satisfactory to you. Remember to check them YOURSELF or, by someone you trust if you are unavailable because, landlords,Caretakers and House agents can be funny.
AMENITIES (Electricity,Water supply and Network service): They might seem of little importance while looking for a house but, their importance can't be over emphasised. Ask questions and confirm the answers to avoid packing into a house where its electricity is connected to a spoilt transformer with no hope of being fixed in the nearest future. You do not want to look like you've been squeezed out of a bag with your rumpled outfits especially if you do not own a generator set or, you don't have the means to burn fuel frequently. Or, do you want to always go out with your phone chargers, rechargeable torchlights and any moveable electric appliance. Seriously hoping for electricity to be wherever you intend on going.
Try to surf the internet in your prospective house first before paying. You might be like " If MTN no work, Airtel go work if en no work too, Etisalat (9mobile) or, GLO go work". That was how I thought when my family was about moving houses. Brethren, all these networks hardly work in this house. My network provider always tell my callers my phone is switched off even when it is on and, well charged and trust me it's frustrating. To avoid standing 45 degrees at a particular spot before you get little network, check this. Only the poor network in your house can make you miss so many tests, fixed classes and other important messages and calls people might want to pass across.
We all know how water is important right? I know water is available almost everywhere but, don't live in a house where water is 'almost' available. It could frustrate your being.
SECURITY: No one wants to live in a place where you won't be sure of your life or, properties by the next minute. You might need assistance in this especially if you are unfamiliar with the environment. Does the house have security-intended measures it could be iron protectors for windows, gantry for doors, e.t.c especially for people that can get easily scared like me. I know God saves but then, he helps those who help themselves.
NEIGHBOURHOOD: This is important too especially if you are raising children. Children are easily influenced and can easily pick up habits( especially bad ones). You wouldn't want to live in a neighbourhood almost everyone sell and smoke weed(infact, whatever smokeable) or, a neighbourhood filled with hotels, clubs and the rest. Neither do you want to live where stealing and fights are the other of the day, gunshots all night. Whether you notice it or not,it could affect the child(ren).
Also, if continuous noise affects you, search for a house in a quiet, less busy neighbourhood. Else, your peace of mind might be ALWAYS tampered with.
Real PRICE of the ACCCOMODATION:
Yes you read that right. Ask the care taker, landlord or, agent. Whoever you are authorized to pay the money to very well before you commit your hard earned money in this recession. They might be very polite, friendly and all until you pay the 'rent' that is when you will discover you are to also pay ridiculous fees like. 'Matching ground', 'drinks','damages', e.t.c and you might be suprised when you are asked for extra money for electricity. Wait you think it's in the rent money? Suprise!!!.
This is when you know the true nature of you landlord or,caretaker. Ehen, what can you do? You cannot even vex and ask for a refund? You must be dreaming because, you won't see shishi. You either give them their money or, face series of embarrassments until you do. To avoid situations like this, ask thorough questions. Infact Sign agreements if possible. Yeso it's that important.
P.s: It might be rare to find a house with all the qualities above. So, some features can be forfeited according to your scale of preferance.
Also, if you school in Nigeria and your school is under ASUU, Please do not pay your rent until the strike is officially called before you become homeless without using your money and remember, you shouldn't get a house just because, all or most of your friends are or, will be living there. Get a house because, you'll be comfortable living there.
And please, Not all landlords or caretakers are not nice. One of my aunts once had a landlord that took his tenants to shayo almost all weekends. He takes care of all the bills kpata kpata. Just wear clothes and come. Did I hear your wish for such a landlord? Yesooo!
GOODLUCK in your house hunt.
.
I couldn't resist showing off this picture from yesterday. I made myself up people (I know I you didn't hear you call me a liar else,). Ehn you caught me thank you. The lady behind this glamour is @peculiarbeautyglam. That's her instagram handle. Please visit and patronise her. Her prices are incredibly affordable. Infact go through her handle let her works do the talking.
Hint: She takes her time and is also fast. She won't bend bend your neck until it becomes sore...lol (why do we nigerians repeat words twice to lay emphasis sef like, bend bend, tear tear, cry cry e.t.c?)
Kai fine woman. This was taken with a phone camera then, Imagine when you see the ones taken with a camera. I'm considering saving them for my birthday picture in August(seriously) with some long ass inspirational/motivational writeups I don't even keep.
Last night just before my mum screamed at me to goan remove my 'bat wings'.
Trust me I got enough preaching. Add it to the one I got from a random woman earlier yestermorning(my word) on my hair that aint moderate. I'm heaven bound y'all.
